Growing up as a queer child throughout the 90s and early 00s, Céline Dion was one of my greatest idols, and she still is today. I have many vivid memories of belting out My Heart Will Go On at the top of my lungs as a five-year-old. Whenever my Nonni (grandmother) would put in the Titanic soundtrack and hand me the microphone at family gatherings, I would light up like Christmas and embrace my inner diva!
As I got older, my admiration for Céline only grew stronger. Not in a sexual or physical way, but sonically, baby. Her voice, her voix, her French-Canadian accent—everything about her singing is silky smooth in a way that commands attention.
To me, Céline embodies pure emotion and raw talent. Her ability to take a song, sing the heck out of it, and make it soar like a majestic eagle is unparalleled. And let’s not forget that on top of all that talent, she is a hard worker! Her dedication to her craft is truly inspiring. As she once said, “I’ve always been driven by my passion for music and my quest to make it perfect. That’s the way I am (That’s The Way It Is reference?).”
From The Power of Love to It’s all Coming Back to Me Now, her music has been the soundtrack to so many moments in my life. Her voice has a way of cutting through the cacophony of the day-to-day, and pulling at your heart strings.
Here are the Top 10 Céline Dion Moments I’m Obsessed With:
Winning the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest, representing Switzerland with Ne partez pas sans moi at 20 years old!
The Titanic phenomena that was My Heart Will Go On.
3. The Prayer with Josh Groban, playing at your local mall or shopping plaza.
Her 2002, Chrysler Town & Country minivan commercial.
Her 2004 Chrysler Town & Country commercial, with her hit song I Drove All Night, cementing her status as an automotive icon.
Her cute and slightly cringe (only slightly because of the age gap) romance and marriage with the late René Angélil.
Her cameo and collaboration with Miss Piggy from The Muppets in Muppets Most Wanted (2014) for the song Something So Right.
Her unexpected, yet emotional presence on the Deadpool 2 soundtrack with Ashes.
Her moment with Charice Pempengco (now Jake Zyrus) on Oprah, leading to rise of this child prodigy and their eventual few episodes on Glee.
The entirety of her Vegas Residency at Caesar’s Palace.
